This is a pretty cool look at the difference between lifelong activity and sitting on your butt as far as your muscles are concerned.

Must. Not. Get. Fatter... →
This is a somewhat dispiriting article in the NY Times Magazine about how hard it is to take off weight gain once it has been put on. Apparently the body wants to keep the extra weight on even though it’s bad for you. Your body actually works more efficiently during exercise so that you don’t burn as many calories. How cruel is that? I do wonder how doing some more high intensity...

Op-Ed on Occupy Wall Street and Gandhi →
I actually thought there were some interesting ideas in this editorial. I think the most astute one is : Gandhi would underscore that social transformation requires significant responsibility on the part of each of us. The world is not a static system or an unalterable one. Society exists in a certain way when we enter it, but it is our actions or our inaction that maintain the status quo,...

Bachmann Compares Self to Gay Rapist Clown Serial... →
Kicking off her presidential campaign in Waterloo, Iowa, Michele Bachmann explained the geographic significance to Fox News: “Well what I want them to know is just like, John Wayne was from Waterloo, Iowa.  That’s the kind of spirit that I have, too.” This is problematic, the Washington Times explains, because “beloved movie star” John Wayne is not from...

Loneliness and the Long Distance Runner →
Some interesting findings about the effects of loneliness in rats. The transition to humans is a bit harder to show in this sort of study. It does make you think about how we interact as people and what the effects of group workouts might be. Oh, the title doesn’t have much to do with the article. They don’t talk about long distance running. Just rats on wheels…

TV is REALLY bad for you!  →
Holy Crap! I’d heard that sitting around doing nothing wasn’t the best thing for you, but this takes it to new levels. Check this out: The study followed 4,512 middle-aged Scottish men for a little more than four years on average. It found that those who said they spent two or more leisure hours a day sitting in front of a screen were at double the risk of a heart attack or other...

Exercise Science for Women All Wrong →
So I’ve been reading the Well Blog on the NY Times site for a while now and they’ve had some pretty interesting articles on how all the research on exercise science is based mostly on male athletes. Only in recent studies have they started to look at the differences in the way men and women’s bodies deal with the stresses of exercise. Today I just read that the Max Heart Rate...

Advice on Sleeping →
Having trouble sleeping? Here’s some advice and information from a former insomniac.  The most interesting thing about this article is the part about eating first thing in the morning making you sleep better. Also, there is no set amount of sleep that humans need. It’s all about the individual.

A good piece in Wired about how the internet rewires our brains and makes critical thinking harder. I apparently it’s making us more susceptible to distractions and keeps us from the more in depth reading which leads to… Oh! Look! A cookie!

Zen Habits: Barefoot Running →
About 6 months ago I mentioned that I was going to try Barefoot running. I managed to do one day of it running about 2 miles. I intend to start trying to pick it up again now that it’s warm.  This article is a pretty complete guide to running barefoot. I highly suggest reading it if you are thinking about doing anything so foolish.

Science of Commitment →
An interesting article explaining some research on what leads people to stay committed in a relationship and what doesn’t.  But it may not be feelings of love or loyalty that keep couples together. Instead, scientists speculate that your level of commitment may depend on how much a partner enhances your life and broadens your horizons — a concept that Arthur Aron, a psychologist and...

Coverage of the St. Vincent's Closing →
I have to say that I’m pretty bummed that St. Vincent’s is closing. I’ve definitely spent some time in their emergency room after a couple of stupid accidents. My roommate’s finger was saved by rushing him to St. Vincent’s after it was shattered in a window. I guess since I moved to Queens it’s no longer such a big deal. Still, it’s sad to see it go....

Bar Cars? →
I can’t believe that they have these going out to Connecticut and nowhere else. It’s sad to find that this kind of thing is almost coming to an end. You’d almost think that the trains could make money off of bar cars if they put them back in commuter trains throughout the Tri-state area. Love this photo from the 70’s. It makes me want to bring back the comb over…

NYT: Exercise Rethought →
But in the exercising group, the dose of exercise required was nearly an hour a day of moderate-intensity activity, what the federal government currently recommends for weight loss but “a lot more than what many people would be able or willing to do,” Ravussin says. I find this quote annoying. Basically the article is saying that exercise alone isn’t going to improve weight loss...

Sitting Will Kill You! →
This article linked watching TV to being more likely to end up dead. I think though if you look at it closer it’s more about being sedentary in general. Meaning that our office lifestyle is detrimental to our health. I guess these jobs are really killing us.

When I originally came across this article in the Times, I thought it was for a new exhibit at the Museum of Natural History. This is a kind of funny article about how Harry Reid momentarily put his bill in jeopardy: It was the pinnacle moment of his political career. And Mr. Reid, who has fought, night and day, nail...
